2023 #5: Crazy summer

What a crazy summer! We had a lot going on. Steph has gone 1 year cancer-free on her first-line treatment. Our son got married. We're about to retire. We've got major construction at our house. And, we've camped. A lot.

First things first. Steph was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer last summer, 12 years after her initial cancer diagnosis and treatments. We are very happy to report that the current treatment has been successful so far, with no evidence of disease on her most current scans. On top of that, she felt well enough to get out and enjoy this past summer. We certainly made the best of it.

As I posted earlier, we started camping right after school got out in June (we're both teachers) with a week dry-camping at Hammonasset State Park. We had a nice corner site in the woods overlooking the tidal marsh. A week later we returned to "Hammo" in a different site - this one in an open field - for 2 more weeks.

In July, our son married Katherine, the love of his life, in a beautiful small wedding here in CT. It was a wonderful day.

We followed it with 2 weeks dog-sitting one of their dogs while they were on their honeymoon. Truffle was a delightful houseguest. It was nice having a dog around again.

After returning Truffle to the kids we went to Rocky Neck State Park for a few days, then headed up to York, Maine for a week on the Maine shore with some friends. They have a decent little zoo there, too.

We went straight from York back to Rocky Neck for another few days. At that point, we were supposed to return home, but there was a catch. We're building a large detached garage in our back yard and the construction prevented us from bringing the trailer home.

It will be 30x30 foot garage big enough to hold our truck and the Oliver trailer, with a little extra storage on the side but, for the moment, it was in the way.

Since we couldn't bring the trailer home, we were very lucky to find an open site at Hammonasset for a week. We had to go back to work at that point, so we beached the trailer there. When that site ran out, we were able to move the trailer to a site at Rocky Neck until Labor Day. For Labor Day weekend we took it and joined our friends camping with full hookups near Brattleboro, VT.

As I write this, we're teaching our last few months of school before retirement, watching the garage grow taller in the back yard, and getting ready for the last few camping trips of 2023 before we have to winterize Eggcelsior.

Happy Fall!
